I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been to Sisters, but somehow I still stumble across a new favorite shop or hidden gem every single visit. If you’re planning a trip to this little Western town in Central Oregon, here’s a guide to a fantastic trip.
Sisters, Oregon Logistics:
- The Drive: Sisters is located about 2.5 to 3 hours from Portland (approximately 150 miles). You will enjoy a scenic drive over the Santiam Pass on US-20 E, and end up in the town.
- Weather Tips: High desert climate rules apply here. Expect blazing sunshine during the day and a rapid drop in temperature as soon as the sun dips. I’ve made the mistake of not bringing enough layers. Learn from me and bring a sweatshirt!

1. Explore Downtown Sisters
Take a stroll through the historic 1880s-themed downtown. While the rustic storefronts look like a classic Western movie set, they are actually packed with modern Sisters, Oregon boutiques, art galleries, and local makers. There are fun Western themed shops, quite a few boutiques, gear stores and vintage stores a plenty.
2. Hike the Black Butte Trail
Hike the Black Butte trail for panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains. This moderate hike is a steady climb, but the 360-degree view of the Cascade Range from the summit is worth every step. Half of the trail is covered in tree cover, the other half is open and does get pretty hot with the direct sunlight.
3. Relax at Suttle Lake
Suttle Lake is your go-to destination for a lake day near Sisters. You can walk around the lake or rent a paddleboard to explore the crystal-clear water. Make sure to stop at the deck of the historic Suttle Lake Lodge for a cold drink.

- Whychus Creek Trail: A scenic canyon hike leading to a spectacular overlook of the rushing river below.
- Peterson Ridge Trail: Located on the edge of town, this massive network is a favorite for mountain biking in Sisters and easy trail runs.
- Tumalo Falls: A must-see Central Oregon waterfall, the 97-foot Tumalo Falls is incredibly pretty and easily accessible, making it a perfect quick stop for photography enthusiasts.

- Sisters Coffee Company: This is the place to go for coffee and yummy pastries. Start your morning in their log-cabin roastery. It gets super busy so bear that in mind when going to get your morning coffee. If you’re a chai lover like myself, get the Metolius Chai. It’s a gingery, spiced chai that I love a little too much.
- The Barn in Sisters: An outdoor food cart pod with a central taproom. They have a good variety of food trucks and a fun patio vibe for everyone.
- The Open Door: Ideal for a sit-down dinner featuring a beautiful garden patio and curated wine list.
- Three Creeks Brewing: A classic post-hike stop for award-winning local ales and elevated pub fare.
- The Ski Inn: A historic, no-frills local tavern known for classic comfort food.
