Black Butte Ranch – The Ultimate Travel Guide for the Best Vacation

Central Oregon is packed with fun things to do, but if I had to pick one place to make my home base, it’s Black Butte Ranch. You get those giant ponderosas and mountain views, but the real draw is the vibe. It feels almost nostalgic, kids just disappear on their bikes for hours, and adults actually get a chance to sit back and relax.

It has amazing amenities for anyone in the family to enjoy. If you are planning a massive multi-generational family reunion, a long weekend with your friend group, or a sunny high-desert getaway, here is your guide to killing it at Black Butte. 

Getting to Black Butte Ranch

From Portland, OR

Drive Time: ~2 hours 40 minutes (146 miles)

Route: Head south on I-5 toward Salem, take Exit 253 for OR-22 East, and follow the scenic drive through Santiam Pass. Merge onto US-20 East, which brings you straight to the Ranch entrance just past Sisters.

From PDX (Portland International Airport)

Drive Time: ~2 hours 55 minutes (160 miles)

Route: Head south out of the airport on I-205 South to connect with I-5 South, then take OR-22 East over Santiam Pass to US-20 East.

Alternative Route: For an extra scenic route, take US-26 East past Mt. Hood through Government Camp, then head south on OR-126/US-20 toward Sisters.

From Bend, OR

Drive Time: ~45 minutes (33 miles)

Route: Head northwest out of Bend on US-20 West straight through the charming town of Sisters. Black Butte Ranch is located just 8 miles west of Sisters on the right side of the highway.

From Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM / Bend-Redmond Airport)

Drive Time: ~45 minutes (30 miles)

Route: Take OR-126 West straight from Redmond into Sisters, then turn right onto US-20 West for 8 miles to reach the Ranch main gate.

Tip: RDM is the closest commercial airport to the Ranch! Flying in here lets you skip the mountain pass drive entirely.


Golf:

Golf courses are one of the must-dos on the ranch. Black Butte Ranch houses two amazing 18-hole courses right on site. Both offer full driving ranges, and stocked pro shops, so bring your clubs and get ready for epic views on every single hole.

  • Big Meadow Golf Course: This course features huge fairways, towering trees, and gorgeous looks at the Three Sisters and Mt. Washington.
  • Glaze Meadow Golf Course: Glaze Meadow has a classic-resort feel. Elevated greens, crisp tee boxes, and deep, grass-faced bunkers make it an absolute blast to play no matter your handicap.
  • Little Meadow Putting Course: Perfect for families, non-golfers, or anyone who wants to talk some trash over a casual game!

The Pool Lineup:

Five distinct pool spots mean you can match your mood every single day. Pack the beach bag, grab your favorite towels, and hop around the property to find your personal paradise!

  • The Lodge & Lakeside Pool: The best option!! You get front-row, panoramic views of the lake and the Cascades while floating in the clear water. Grab a cold cocktail or an iced drink from the poolside bar or rent paddle boards and kayaks to enjoy the trip.
  • Glaze Meadow Recreation Center: Families, families, families! Featuring a massive outdoor pool, a year-round indoor lap pool, hot tubs, and a super fun splash pad for the kids. There is also an indoor fitness center right here if you want to get a workout in before your swim. I’d recommend it for families. If you’re like me and don’t necessarily want that, head to the Lodge or any of the other pools for less action.
  • Upper Glaze Meadow Pool: Tucked right into the pine trees, this secondary spot is ideal when you want a quick, breezy dip away from the main hub.
  • South Meadow Pool: Super laid-back and peaceful. Perfect for kicking back with a great book under an umbrella while the kids splash around in a quieter setting. Just an FYI, it does get super shady which makes the pool temps a little colder.
  • Paulina Pool: A sweet, low-key neighborhood pool hidden in the trees that is amazing for escaping the mid-day crowds. There is no parking for this pool, so grab a bike or walk to enjoy.

Cruise Around: 18 Miles of Bike Paths & Court Games

The best part about the Ranch? The total car-free freedom. Over 18 miles of paved, traffic-free bike paths wind through the entire property, crossing over wooden bridges and cruising through open meadows. Ditch the car keys, bring or rent your bike, and bike everywhere from morning coffee runs to ice cream trips.

If you love a little friendly competition, there are plenty of courts available:

  • Pickleball Courts: The Pickleball courts are a hot commodity during the summer. Make sure to grab reservations at some of the hotspots like the courts near the Glaze Meadow pool.
  • Tennis Courts: There are plenty of courts around the ranch. Most are located near the pools.
  • Bocce Ball Courts: I love a good bocce game. There are courts near the Glaze Meadow pool.
  • Disc Golf & Volleyball: Fun bonus activities available near the Robert’s Pub and  for casual group hangouts.

Outdoor Adventures Beyond the Pools:

While lounging by the pool is a top priority, Black Butte Ranch is packed with outdoor activities that showcase the natural beauty of Central Oregon.

  • Lake Water Sports: Head to the Lakeside Activity Center to rent stand-up paddleboards, canoes, or kayaks. 
  • Fly Fishing: The lake is stocked for catch-and-release fly fishing, making it a great spot for beginners and experienced anglers to practice their cast.
  • Horseback Riding: The Black Butte Ranch Stables offer guided trail rides through the surrounding Deschutes National Forest. It is an incredible way to experience the pine forests and mountain trails from a unique perspective.

Eat and Drink:

  • The Lodge Restaurant: Book a table here for dinner at sunset. Outstanding Pacific Northwest dishes focusing on seasonal ingredients, and floor-to-ceiling mountain views make this an absolute must-visit during your stay. Go to the bar upstairs for the best view and a quick drink!
  • Lakeside Bistro: Right next to the Lodge pool! Pop in for morning espresso, fresh pastries, wood-fired pizzas, and cold draft beers on the sunny, lakefront patio.
  • Robert’s Pub: Located at the Big Meadow Golf Course, this is the post-round hangout. Expect pub grub and good views. I’d recommend hanging out on the patio for a drink and a quick bite to check out some mountain views.
  • Glaze Meadow Food Truck & Snack Shop: It’s super convenient when you are mid-pool day and need quick tacos, burgers or italian sodas.
  • General Store: Need to restock your cabin kitchen? The on-site store has local snacks, coffee, wine, ice, and all the forgotten essentials so you do not have to drive into town.
    • Tip: Ray’s in Sisters is about an 11 minute drive away for a good grocery store option.

Cute Cabins & Mountain Homes:

Black Butte Ranch is all about renting private vacation homes, cozy custom cabins, and cool golf course condos. Options vary from a low-key two-bedroom cabin nestled in the trees or a massive multi-story house with a private hot tub, stone fireplace, and big wrap-around deck for the whole extended family.

Many homes come equipped with fully stocked kitchens, outdoor grills, and bikes ready in the garage, allowing you to cook family meals at home and host casual deck BBQs after a long day of adventure. You can find the homes for rent via the Black Butte website, Airbnb or VRBO.

Tips for Black Butte:

  • To Book Bikes Early: If you are visiting during peak summer months and not bringing your own bikes, reserve your rentals from the Glaze Meadow Recreation Center. They are first come, first served and are super expensive. 
  • Pack Layers: Central Oregon high-desert weather means warm, sunny days followed by crisp, cool mountain nights. Pack light jackets and sweaters for sunset patio sessions.
  • Explore Nearby Sisters: Take a quick ten-minute drive into the western town of Sisters for cute local boutiques, coffee roasters, and bakery treats. Make sure to hit up Sisters Coffee Company!
  • Hit the Trails: You cannot visit without tackling the namesake Black Butte hike for 360-degree views of the Cascades. Central Oregon is a hiker’s paradise, surrounded by endless alpine trails. Just be ready for a little elevation burn and make sure to grab your wilderness permits ahead of time!
