Driving out from Portland for the day? Follow this quick guide to map out the perfect Willamette Valley day trip. You can easily swap out the specific wineries, but this game plan keeps your pacing relaxed, your stomach full, and your stress levels at zero.
Three spots is the magic number: one for morning bubbles, one for stunning views, and one pure-vibes estate to round it out. Here is how to map out a perfect day.
11am – Morning Bubbles at Domaine Willamette
My recommendation is to leave Portland around 10am to beat the coastal traffic, and make your first stop Domaine Willamette. Starting the day with sparkling wine just feels right.
Not in a sparkly mood? You can order any bottle from the Willamette Valley Vineyards lineup, so grab whatever catches your eye.
The outdoor space here is huge, the patio looks out over the valley, and the energy is super relaxing. If you skipped breakfast on the drive, do yourself a favor and order the fondue dip. I had it months ago and still think about it.
12pm – Lunch at Red Hills Market
Head straight into Dundee and go to my fave, Red Hills Market. It’s pretty much the default lunch stop for a reason, the wood-fired pizzas are amazing, the sandwiches are massive, and you don’t need a fancy reservation. Just order at the counter, grab a table, and drink a massive glass of water to pace yourself for the afternoon.
It will be busy during lunch time, so make sure to the line isn’t too long before you have your next tasting reservation!
1:30pm – Tuscan Vibes at Alloro Vineyard
After lunch, drive up into the hills to Alloro. The whole place looks like a Tuscan farmhouse randomly dropped into Oregon.
It’s easily one of the most aesthetic vineyards around here, but zero percent snobby. Grab a glass of Pinot, get a piece of their homemade focaccia, and go say hi to the resident goats behind the tasting room.
3:30pm – Feeling Fancy at Furioso Vineyards
Finish up at Furioso. Furioso feels like the opposite to Alloro as it’s super modern and sleek.
The whole tasting room is basically floor-to-ceiling glass wrapped around the vines. It’s the perfect place to sit back on the terrace, soak up the late afternoon sun, and feel like you have your life completely together. Highly recommend if you, too, are running on chaos.
5:30pm – Casual Bites Before Heading Home
Instead of driving straight back into Portland traffic, hang out in downtown Newberg for an hour:
- Super casual: Grab a glass at the Newberg Stoller downtown wine bar and wander across the street to the food trucks.
- Sit-down dinner: Book a cozy table at Trellis in Dundee, or head to The Newbergundian Bistro for incredible comfort food.
- Dive-bar: If you’re itching for a classic dive bar experience, you can head to Lumpy’s in the heart of Dundee. Don’t expect a bougie wine-tasting experience, but some fun times for pool and pitchers.
Quick Tips to Keep in Mind for your Willamette Valley trip
- Book early: Don’t just show up expecting an open table on a Saturday. Book your tasting slots a week or two out.
- Don’t count on Uber: Rideshares are super spotty once you get out into the Dundee Hills. Figure out your designated driver situation before you leave the house.
- Stick to the plan: Seriously, resist the urge to add “just one more stop.” Three wineries, good food, and zero rushing makes the best day trip every single time.
