Getting to Newport from Portland, OR
Drive Time: ~2.5 to 3 hours (130 miles)
The Route: Head south on I-5, take Exit 228 for OR-34 West toward Corvallis, and follow OR-20 West directly into Newport.
Alternative Route: For an extra scenic drive through lush mountain forests and rolling hills, take US-18 West toward the coast and merge onto US-101 South.
Weather Tips
The coast has a personality of its own! Even if it is a scorching 90°F inland in Portland, Newport will often hover at a brisk, breezy 65°F. Pack layers, a legit windbreaker, and cozy sweaters so you can stay warm and stylish no matter what the Pacific throws your way!
Getting there from Bend, OR
Drive Time: ~3.5 to 4 hours (177 miles)
The Route: Take US-20 West straight out of Bend through Sisters, cross the scenic Santiam Pass, and continue through Corvallis straight into Newport.
Alternative Route: Follow US-20 West over Santiam Pass, then take OR-22 West toward Salem and connect to OR-18/OR-229 for a breezy, scenic winding route down through coastal mountain ranges.

Never, ever turn your back on the ocean! Sneaker waves are a very real phenomenon on the Pacific Northwest coast and can pull you in fast. Always keep a close eye on the water, stay off logs near the surf line, and play it smart on the sand.
When to Visit
July through September offers prime sunshine season with the warmest, clearest days. If you prefer peaceful strolls and having massive sandy beaches all to yourself, target May, June, or October for a lower-key experience.

Newport conveniently splits into two distinct, super fun neighborhoods, and to truly experience the town, you absolutely need to explore both:
1. Historic Bayfront
The vibrant, bustling heart of Newport’s working waterfront. Check out the fun shops in this neighborhood while listening to the loud colony of sea lions barking from the piers. Rent a few crab pots right on the waterfront and drop your lines while watching the fishing boats come and go.
I highly recommend going to a nice dinner at Local Ocean or Clearwater on the bayfront. Stop by The Barge Inn Tavern to grab a drink at your local watering hole. The Barge has some great bites. If you’re like me and a vegetarian, maybe skip eating here due to lack of options.
2. Historic Nye Beach
Your artsy, walkable, and super charming beachfront neighborhood. Grab an artisanal espresso and explore cute local boutiques. Pop into cozy bakeries or claim a spot on the sand to breathe in fresh ocean air.
The beach in front of the neighborhood is gorgeous and doesn’t get too crowded in the summertime. Nana’s Irish Pub is the spot to go for cozy vibes and a pint of Guinness.

- Nana’s Irish Pub: Located in Nye Beach, this cozy, welcoming pub is ideal for foggy coastal afternoons. Stop in for traditional fish and chips, savory shepherd’s pie, and a cold pint.
- Noodle Cafe: The perfect spot when you need a warm, delicious reset after a chilly walk by the water. Get their bibimbap, you won’t regret it!
- South Beach Fish Market: A no-frills, incredibly authentic staple. Famous for generous portions, clam chowder, and the kind of fried seafood perfection where you eat with your hands.
