As a life-long Oregonian, I’m surprised that Pacific City didn’t show up on my radar sooner. I used to spend my summer days heading to the North Coast or hitting up spots like Lincoln City and Newport. It wasn’t until shortly before COVID that I first visited Pacific City, and I’ve been hooked ever since. It has everything that makes the Oregon Coast special, but with fewer crowds (at least most of the time). You can climb the massive sand dune, wander down to Neskowin to check out the Ghost Forest, or grab a sunset beer at Pelican Brewing. The town itself is pretty compact, so I’ve put together the ultimate lowdown on where to adventure, eat, and stay based on my super frequent trips here over the last few years.
The Best Hikes & Views Near Pacific City:
Pacific City sits right at the southern anchor of the famous Three Capes Scenic Route, making it a perfect spot to base yourself for some hiking.
1. Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area: The Great Dune!!
Distance: 1 to 2 miles round trip
You simply cannot visit Pacific City without tackling the famous Cape Kiwanda Great Dune. Charge up the 200-foot wall of golden sand to earn incredible bird’s-eye views of Chief Kiwanda Rock and the waves crashing below. I am afraid of heights and get vertigo when climbing up things like this, but I promise you, the view is worth it.
Tips: Head up about 45 minutes before golden hour for unbelievable photos, and always stay behind the safety fences along the sandstone edges!
2. Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge:
Distance: 0.6 to 2.7 miles
It’s located just ten minutes south of town, this refuge is where seven river systems meet the sea. Take the paved Pacific View Trail for a gentle walk to a timber deck overlooking the entire bay, or wander the gravel paths through coastal meadows. It’s a great walk with zero crowds. I went during the fall and saw only one other group on the path.
3. Cascade Head Trail: Big Vistas & Coastal Prairies
Distance: 4.2 to 4.8 miles out-and-back
Just 20 minutes south near Neskowin, Cascade Head is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that makes you work for the views. You will climb up through dense, mossy forests before breaking out onto wind-swept cliffside meadows with views of the coastline.
4. Drift Creek Falls: Suspension Bridges & Rainforest Magic
Distance: 3.0 miles out-and-back
Venture inland into the Siuslaw National Forest for a fun forest trek. The reward waiting at the end is a 240-foot suspension bridge hanging high over a canyon, looking directly at a 75-foot waterfall. .
Explore Neskowin
Neskowin is a 15 minute drive from Pacific City. The town is teeny, but the views are magnificent. Plus, Hawk Creek Cafe rocks!
- The Ghost Forest: During low tide, ancient 2,000-year-old Sitka spruce stumps emerge from the sand, creating a beautiful Neskowin Ghost Forest.
- Proposal Rock: Walk out to this sea stack at low tide for the best tide pooling and photography on the coast.
Tip: Check the tide charts before you go. You must visit during low tide to see the stumps, and you will need to wade across a stream to reach them.

- Pelican Brewing Company: You cannot beat this location! Sitting right on the sand, this is the best spot to grab a local craft beer while watching the local surfers catching waves.
- Meridian Restaurant and Bar: Feeling fancy? Head here for an upscale evening. Grab a seat at the bar during sunset. The floor to ceiling windows offer the most gorgeous views in town, and their happy hour actually has good deals and is one of my faves.
- Grateful Bread Bakery: Start your morning here for a hearty breakfast. Do not leave without some of their famous cookies to take home. They are ginormous and amazing!!
- Stimulus Coffee Company: Fuel up at the closest coffee shop to the beach. Here you’ll find extremely yummy blueberry scones and cinnamon pastries. It is the only coffee shop on the beach side of the river, so it tends to be pretty expensive for a cup of coffee. I’m talking about $8ish for a 16 oz chai latte. Woof!
- Beach Walk: Head here for some yummy noodles and curries!
The Local Hangouts
- Sportsman’s Pub and Grub: If you want the real Pacific City experience, head to this local dive bar. It is unpretentious, friendly, and serves up solid, decent pub food that hits the spot after a long day on the dunes.
- The Riverhouse Nestucca: A popular spot known for its great atmosphere and yummy food. I’m a vegetarian and haven’t been yet. They don’t have any veggie options, so definitely make note of that if you’re one as well.
- Los Caporales: If you want a margarita the size of your head and endless chips and salsa, this is the place for you. Right across from the Sportsmans, you can pair watching a game at the local bar with some yummy Mexican food
Where to Stay:
Choosing the right home base is key to an easy coastal trip. Here are five recommended places to stay in Pacific City:
- Shorepine Village: A great spot for families and groups, this planned community features modern beach homes with full kitchens and gas fireplaces. Paved paths lead directly through the dunes to the sand. This neighborhood is a quick walk away to the shops, Pelican, and the dune.
- Cape Kiwanda Vacation Rentals: Look for rentals in the Kiwanis Village or Pacific City Heights neighborhoods. You will be within a five-minute walk of the beach, coffee shops, and surf spots.
- Headlands Coastal Lodge and Spa: The best choice for luxury getaway. Every room is oceanfront with a stunning view of Chief Kiwanda Rock. It is perfect for couples as it has a great spa!
- The Inn at Cape Kiwanda: A cozy hotel located directly across the street from the beach and Pelican Brewing. It offers a coastal atmosphere without the resort formality.
- Surf and Sand Inn: If you are looking for a budget-friendly and nostalgic experience, this clean, simple motel is your best bet.

- What to Pack: Bring a waterproof rain jacket, a cozy beanie, and sturdy walking shoes.
- Best Time to Visit: Summer offers the warmest beach days, but autumn brings clear, crisp skies and fewer crowds, making it perfect for quiet, reflective beach walks.
