The Ultimate One-Day Portland Itinerary

Skip the guidebook. Here’s a locals guide to an amazing day in Portland, OR. 

Morning: Coffee and The Greenery

Portland has too many coffee shops making it hard to choose. I’d recommend looking up a local shop near where you’re staying, but here are my recs on the west side of town near Powell’s and the Rose Garden.

Greenery & Books

  • Rose Garden: Wander through 10,000+ roses with a city view. It’s a great free option for views and pretty flowers. Roses are seasonal, so make sure to check if they are in season before visiting. 
  • Japanese Garden: Cross the street to find the most authentic Japanese garden outside of Japan. It’s $22.50 per adult ticket. 
  • Forest Park: Need a breather? Hike the Lower Macleay Trail to reach the Witch’s Castle stone ruin. It’s a quick hike but super pretty. 
  • Powell’s Books: Powell’s is the world’s largest independent bookstore and a must visit. The flagship City of Books occupies an entire city block and houses so many books. 

Afternoon: Neighborhood Hopping

Choose your vibe: historic charm or serious vintage treasure hunting.

  • For Chic Finds, go to NW 23rd Ave: Walk twenty-third. Historic homes converted into boutiques make this the best street for window shopping. Stop by Tender Loving Empire for local maker goods and grab Thai food at Tara Thai or Red Onion for lunch.
  • For Vintage, go to SE Hawthorne Blvd: If you want clothes with a history, head here. House of Vintage is a massive maze of local sellers. For mid-century home decor, you have to hit up Vintage Pink. Once you’re done shopping, grab Khao Moo Dang for lunch, it’s so good!

Evening: Eat and Drink Like a Local

Hit Mississippi Avenue or the Alberta Arts District. These streets have loads of fun bars and restaurants for you to enjoy. 

Dinner and Drinks:

  • Tartuca: A cozy, neighborhood favorite for scratch-made Italian. The menu shifts with the seasons, focusing on fresh handmade pasta, house-cured meats and yummy wines. 
  • Lovely’s Fifty-Fifty: A mandatory stop for pizza lovers. It’s some of my favorite pizza in Portland! Don’t leave without trying a scoop of their house-made ice cream.
  • Paladin Pie: A legendary neighborhood cart churning out some of the crispest sourdough pies in the city. Can you tell I like pizza haha? Do not leave without adding a side of their iconic hot honey.
  • Dar Salam: An essential Portland destination for deeply flavorful, authentic Iraqi cuisine. 
  • Urdaneta: A must visit if you’re into Spanish tapas. The food and vibes are amazing!

Where to Grab a Drink:

  • Prost! & Prost Marketplace: A super fun German pub serving up steins of beer. The patio is huge and home to some of my favorite food carts (check out Matt’s BBQ). 
  • The Rambler: Housed in a converted 1920s bungalow, this tavern feels like hanging out at a friend’s house. With a full bar, board games, fire pits, and a great dog-friendly patio, it is a fantastic spot to settle in for a few drinks.
  • Moloko: A unique spot known for its eclectic interior, massive aquariums, and casual vibe. The aquariums everywhere feel like you’re in a different world. A super fun vibe!
  • Victoria Bar: Victoria does craft cocktails right. Do not leave without ordering a basket of their spicy hushpuppies alongside a signature slushie cocktail.
  • Radio Room: This bar has a great patio and super cute decor. Stop in for their all-day Sunday happy hours or late night food. 
  • Donnie Vegas: They have fun slushy cocktails and are a solid spot to grab a beer.
