If you want to step directly into a time machine, hop on a quick 30-minute train from Madrid and head to Toledo. Sitting high above the Tagus River, this whole town feels like a living movie set: narrow cobblestone streets, towering fortresses, and incredible history packed into every single corner.
I was pleasantly surprised with Toledo. Despite being busy and catering towards tourists, the town is too gorgeous to miss!
Getting Around: The Toledo Monumental Tourist Bracelet
Before you start wandering, grab a Toledo Monumental Tourist Bracelet. We didn’t get the tourist bracelets and ended up regretting our decision by the 2nd site we went to. For 14 euros, you get access to 7 different monuments in Toledo. Each site had great architecture and a unique history to explore. You can purchase online or in the ticket offices of the monuments.
My favorite stops in Toledo:
Toledo is known as the “City of Three Cultures” because Christian, Muslim, and Jewish traditions lived side-by-side here for centuries. You can really feel that rich blend of styles when you visit these three spots:
- Toledo Cathedral: Gothic architecture on a grand scale. The interior detail, huge altar, and glowing stained glass are amazing. I’ve been to many Gothic cathedrals around Europe (including the biggies), and thought this was one of the more impressive cathedrals that I’ve been too. I loved it!
- Unlike the other two spots on this list, the cathedral isn’t included in the Toledo Monumental Tourist Bracelet. It costs 12 euro to enter but was worth it considering how vast the cathedral is.
- San Juan de los Reyes Monastery: Beautiful, quiet, and home to one of the most peaceful stone cloisters you will ever see.
- Mosque of Cristo de la Luz: A stunning little piece of history built back in 999 AD that showcases incredible Moorish craftsmanship.
Wandering, Walking Tours, and a Random Zipline
Honestly, the best part of Toledo is just getting lost in the maze of medieval streets. Joining a local walking tour right away is a great move to hear the wild history, learn fun legends, and spot hidden courtyards.
Want a quick adrenaline rush? You can actually zipline right next to the historic San Martín Bridge. It is a super quick ride, but flying over the river with ancient stone arches in the background is hilarious and totally worth it.
Sweets and Sunset Views
The Sweet Stop: You cannot leave town without trying Toledo’s famous marzipan. Head to one of the iconic local spots, like Confitería Santo Tomé, to grab a box of these legendary sweet almond treats. We got a variety of marzipan treats and thought the plain marzipan was the best option!
The Ultimate Golden Hour: Finish your day up at Azotea de Carlos, the rooftop bar tucked away inside Hotel Carlos V. Grab a cold drink and watch the sun set over the classic terracotta rooftops. It is easily one of the best views in the city!
